The project titled “Valorization of Agricultural Wastes through Anaerobic Digestion: From Biogas to Carboxylates,” conducted under the ERANet-LAC Multi-Lateral Cooperation Program, has been successfully completed.

The international research project, led by Prof. Dr. Orhan İnce, a faculty member of the Department of Environmental Engineering at Istanbul Technical University (ITU), and focusing on the sustainable management of agricultural wastes, has been successfully completed.

The project titled “Valorization of Agricultural Wastes through Anaerobic Digestion: From Biogas to Carboxylates” has produced significant scientific outcomes in the fields of environmental biotechnology and circular bioeconomy.

🌍 Strong international collaboration
The project, supported under the European Union, Latin America, and Caribbean Countries Joint Innovation and Research Activities Network (ERANet-LAC) Multi-Lateral Cooperation Program, was carried out in partnership with:
🇩🇪 Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ), Germany
🇹🇷 Istanbul Technical University (Türkiye)
🇧🇷 Federal Institute of Goiás (Brazil)
🇪🇨 ESPOL Polytechnic University (Ecuador)

♻️ Scientific contribution and innovative approach
Within the scope of the project:
• Solutions were developed for the improper disposal of agricultural wastes that pose environmental risks,
• Transition strategies from anaerobic digestion to anaerobic fermentation were thoroughly investigated,
• The potential for high value-added carboxylate production was demonstrated,
• Sustainable approaches for converting wastes into energy and biochemical products were developed.

This study directly contributes to circular bioeconomy goals along the axis of waste management → energy production → green chemicals.

🔬 Demonstrating scientifically that agricultural wastes are not merely a burden to be disposed of, but also a source of high-value bioproducts, this project serves as an important reference in the fields of environmental engineering and biotechnology.
