BOUN & ITU

İTÜ Microbial Ecology Group

As ITU-BOUN MEG Microbial Ecology Group, with our strong team and years of experience

- We Do

Researches to understand ecology not only in engineering design systems but also receiving environments like air, water, soil, extreme environments by using molecular tools; aware of the fact that environmental biotechnology that inherently tied to microbial ecology is a scientific and engineering information system for the use of microorganisms and products, we develop innovative strategies in a wide range of fields.

We work on engineering fields such as prevention of environmental pollution through biotreatment of solid, liquid, and gaseous wastes, bioremediation of polluted environments, biomonitoring of environment and treatment processes, energy generation from wastes and understand these better with the help of molecular systems. Besides that, we also have important works on ecology fields.

We examine the microbial diversity in natural ecosystems such as Black Sea, Marmara Sea and Golden Horn and the biological treatment of petroleum pollutants from anoxic sediments from the Marmara Sea, extreme environment studies such as thermophilic and psychophilic etc. in a multidisciplinary environment under our MEG Group. In addition, we have our own species that we have obtained as a result of our studies.

Availability of a wide range of biotechnological methods and our strong collaborations provides creating innovative new strategies by our MEG Group that needs the use of molecular biological methods and genetic engineering technology. These methods would improve the understanding of existing biological processes in order to increase their efficiency, flexibility and productivity.

As MEG Group, We Use The Latest Methods and Technologies in Our Works at Our Laboratories

New Next Generation Sequencing

Used in special fields such as cancer genomics, RNA sequencing and Epigenomic analysis. Navo Sequencing, Total RNA Sequencing, Chip-Seq, Targeted DNA Sequencing can be the examples for this technique.

Whole Genome Sequencing

Allows detection of molecular sarcomas and various genetic polymorphisms (SNP, insertion, deletion, inversion, complex changes, copy number variations) depending on the yield and suitability of the application used.

Metagenomic

Applied to targeted amplicon studies focuses on one or more phylogenetic marker genes and provides a cost-effective culture-independent method for studying the composition and diversity of complex microbial communities.

Sanger Sequencing

This includes 2 methods: Standard Sequencing and Targeted Sanger Sequencing

Q-PCR

Quantification of specific microbial species using real time PCR (Q-PCR)

Nanopore Sequencing (MISEQ)

3rd Generation sequencing technology including minION & minIT devices used in fields such as microbiology, molecular genetics, targeted amplicon studies, RNA sequencing, whole genome sequencing & de novo sequencing
